The Met office warned Cumbria could be hit by flooding due to heavy rain this weekend

Heavy rain is due to batter Cumbria this weekend with both a yellow warning and an amber alert in place.

The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning from 18:00 GMT on Saturday until 18:00 on Monday.

It will turn into an amber warning for parts of the county from 06:00 until 18:00 on Sunday. The rain is expected to ease off overnight but the alert is in place again for the same times on Monday.

It means areas such as Workington, Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Keswick, Ambleside and Windermere could see fast flowing or deep floodwater, causing a danger to life.

"During the course of Sunday and Monday, over 100 mm of rainfall is expected to accumulate widely across the warning area," The Met Office said.

It added some of the areas covered by the amber warning could see up to 200mm of rain.

Two flood alerts are also in place.

One covers the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwent Water around Keswick, while the other is for the rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster in the Windermere area.

Motorists are warned travel may be disrupted due to flooded roads.

Network Rail also urged passengers to check before they travel.

Darren Miller, infrastructure director at at the firm, said: "Our teams work hard alongside our train operator partners to prepare as much as possible for these extreme weather events, but passengers should be aware that this heavy rain could cause disruption."
