Cumbria Police has warned of scams in operation at Ferry Nab and other locations around Windermere

Drivers have been warned to stay vigilant after scams were detected at car parks near beauty spots.

Cumbria Police said QR code fraud was detected at four sites in the Lake District, which this week is busy with half-term holidaymakers and day trippers.

The scam involves placing stickers with fake QR codes in parking areas, including on official signage, to lead users to fraudulent websites designed to steal payment information.

Police found the fake codes at Broad Street car park in Windermere, Low Fold car park in Ambleside, Ferry Nab parking and Braithwaite Fold car park, both in Bowness-on-Windermere.

QR code parking scams are on the rise across the country, with organised crime gangs linked to the scams.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said checks were taking place and stickers were being removed.

"If the QR code is a sticker, do not scan it," the force warned.

"Legitimate operators rarely use stickers."

It also urged people to check for signs of tampering, use official apps or websites and use alternative payment methods such as cash or credit card at a machine.
