A rail line through the New Forest has been closed while "urgent" repair work is carried out.

South Western Railway (SWR) said services on the branch line between Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier had been suspended until the end of Sunday.

Replacement buses are in place but not running to a timetable because of the short notice of the works.

The single track Lymington Branch Line connects Brockenhurst, on the South West Main Line, to Lymington and the Wightlink ferry to and from the Isle of Wight.

In a statement, SWR said: "Urgent repairs are being carried out between Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier by specialist teams to enable trains to run between these stations."

The line was temporarily closed in 2024 while work was done to strengthen a viaduct over Lymington River and replace about 1.2km (0.75-mile) of track.
