A murder investigation is under way following the death of a woman found stabbed in a Hampshire village.

Gilly Livie, 68, was discovered at an address in Cheriton, near Alresford, on Friday with serious injuries shortly after 10:30 GMT. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said a post-mortem examination found she died as a result of a stab wound to the neck.

The force said a 39-year-old man, known to Livie, who was found at the address with neck and leg injuries, initially described as life-threatening, remained in hospital in a stable condition.

Ch Insp Korine Bishop, district commander, said: "I want to reassure people we have a large number of officers working hard on this investigation.

"At this time we are not looking for any other third party in connection to this investigation, but will continue to investigate with an open mind."

Residents in the village who have CCTV are being urged to check their footage between 23:00 last Thursday and 11:00 the following day.

Officers are expected to remain at the address and the local area for the next few days.

The force said Livie's next-of-kin had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.
