A 65-year-old man has denied murdering a woman whose remains were found in a flat.

George Gordon, of Gerards Court in St Helens, is accused of killing Delia McInerney on or before 13 April 2023.

McInerney's remains were not found until 8 January this year when Merseyside Police searched a property after concerns were raised for her welfare.

Police also charged Gordon with preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body, obstructing a coroner, three counts of fraud and one of theft.

McInerney, who would have turned 65 this year, was described as a "free spirit" who was "kind and helpful" in a tribute from her sister, Rita McInerney.

The victim's home in Douglas Road, Anfield, has also been searched by police during the investigation.

Gordon, who appeared at Liverpool Crown Court earlier on video-link from HMP Liverpool, appeared on screen sitting at a table wearing a grey jumper and glasses, and spoke only to confirm his identity and enter his not guilty plea to the murder charge.

He is next due to appear in court for a case management hearing on 1 May, and a trial date has been set for 12 October with an estimate of four to six weeks.

In the tribute issued via police this week, Rita McInerney said her late sister had been: "A rebel - intelligent with a dynamic personality, kind, caring and helpful. She was well-loved as a sister and friend. I will miss her always."
