The sister of a woman who police believe was murdered nearly three years ago has described her as a "great artist" and a "free spirit".

Delia McInerney is thought to have died on or before 12 April 2023, but her remains were only discovered on 8 January after police searched a flat in Gerards Court, St Helens.

McInerney, who would have been 64 when her body was found, lived in a house on Douglas Road in Anfield, Liverpool, which has also been searched by Merseyside Police.

Rita McInerney said her late sister had been "A rebel - intelligent with a dynamic personality, kind, caring and helpful. She was well-loved as a sister and friend. I will miss her always."

On Saturday, Merseyside Police announced George Gordon, 65, had been charged with McInerney's murder as well as three counts of fraud and one of theft.

Gordon, of Gerards Court in St Helens, had already been charged with preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body and obstructing a coroner.

A trial date has been set for October and he is due to make his next appearance at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday.
