Victorian Christmas part of big festive weekend

A Victorian Christmas is coming to Hull.

The celebration, featuring a Victorian pantomime and a traditional fairground carousel, will be held at the Museums Quarter on 29 and 30 November.

It is part of a big festive weekend for the city, which will see a Christmas market line King Edward Street and musical performances take place in Princes Quay.

Councillor Rob Pritchard, from the city council, said the event was "the perfect opportunity for families to come and get started with their Christmas shopping in a fantastically festive atmosphere".

At the Victorian weekend, hosted by Hull Museums, visitors will be able to learn what Christmas gifts Victorian children received.

The Eclectic Music saxophonists will be playing festive classics and the Barton Community Brass Band, along with the Hull Visual Choir, will be performing.

A production of A Christmas Ghost Story will also be put on by the Northern Academy of Performing Arts at the Museums Quarter.

Pritchard said the organisers would love to see visitors dressed in festive outfits or Victorian attire.

In addition to the Victorian weekend, a wider festive celebration will also be taking place.

There will be street entertainment on Whitefriargate and festive food and drink on offer across the two days.

Children will have the opportunity to meet Father Christmas at the Streetlife Museum. Tickets are £10 and can be booked via the Hull Museums' website.

All other activities are free, apart from the carousel ride, which will be £3 per person.

Hull's Christmas weekend will run from 10:00 to 16:00 GMT on Saturday 29 November and 11:00 until 16:00 on the Sunday.

Pritchard said the events would create "a truly magical, memorable atmosphere for everyone".

Hull Trains is offering free travel to and from Hull from Doncaster, Selby, Howden and Brough on selected services in November and December.

Lou Mendham, Hull Trains' service delivery director, said: "Christmas is always a special time in the region's calendar and we're thrilled to help people get into the heart of the city with free travel."
