One of the main bridges in the centre of Shrewsbury will be closed to traffic in the evening and overnight next week for emergency repairs.

An inspection of Welsh Bridge found "a significant number of balustrades on both parapets" were loose and at risk of falling onto the river or pavement, Shropshire Council said.

Work will take place to make the loose structures safe until a permanent repair is carried out.

During the closure, between 20:00 and 06:00 GMT from Monday to Friday 20 February, the council will also carry out temporary lighting repairs. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists, but "short delays may occur during certain phases".

To carry out the work safely, the bridge would be closed to vehicles and people were thanked for their understanding while "this important work is carried out", the authority said.

Access to properties up to the bridge will be preserved.

Signs are to be put up at the closure points and letters delivered to properties affected.

The work will be carried out by council contractor Kier.
