Drop in number of violent incidents at prison
BBCThe number of fights or assaults inside Jersey's only prison in 2025 was six times lower than the previous year.
The Independent Prison Monitoring Board said four altercations were recorded at La Moye last year, down from 24 in 2024, two of which involved prisoner-on-staff violence while one fight between inmates left a person needing hospital treatment.
Its annual report added the prison was well managed, but resourcing issues meant some important activities were not available for "considerable periods of time".
Justice and Home Affairs Minister Mary Le Hegarat said the government and States of Jersey Prison Service would address any issues raised.
The report said the prison, which can accommodate up to 200 inmates, had a peak population of 182 in October, which was 12 more than the 2024 peak.
It said the lowest number of inmates was recorded at 167 in April, up from 146 in 2024.
Two deaths in custody caused by natural causes were reported during 2025 and there were no attempted escapes, the report added.
It said during visits, inspectors observed "positive and respectful relationships between prison staff and prisoners" and some good initiatives which involved inmates in "purposeful activities".
"We did note that resourcing constraints meant that at times some important activities, including educational activities, were not available for considerable periods of time," the report said.
"We wonder whether it is realistic to expect the prison alone to have the required resources and competencies to operate an education function to serve the broad needs of the prison population."

Le Hegarat said she welcomed the report and would consider its findings carefully.
"By their nature, prisons house a complex and diverse population; colleagues must work with individuals with different needs," she said.
"Highly skilled, highly trained staff ensure that the needs of prisoners are met."
