Prisoner charged with murder of fellow inmate
BBCA prisoner has been charged with murder after another inmate was found dead in his cell.
The body of Tony Joynes, who in 2020 was jailed for 15 years for an axe and knife attack on a couple in their home in Workington, Cumbria, was discovered at HMP Garth near Leyland just after 9:00 BST on 13 July 2025, said Lancashire Police.
An investigation was launched and an inmate in his 30s was arrested at the prison on 22 July on suspicion of murdering 47-year-old Joynes.
A force spokesperson said Shaun Newton, 35, had now been charged and was due to appear before magistrates in Preston later.
