Road and bridge closures for urban park works

Work is under way to build the Stockton Waterfront urban park

Temporary road and footbridge closures have been put in place as works continue to build an urban park.

The ramped section of the Millennium footbridge in Stockton-on-Tees will be removed to make way for a new land bridge structure and amphitheatre.

To accommodate this, the footbridge will be closed to pedestrians for a week from 16:00 GMT on Friday.

Meanwhile, the A1305 Riverside Road will be closed in both directions between Tower Street and Northshore Gyratory in the early hours of Sunday and Monday mornings.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council said the removal works will take overnight on the weekend to "minimise disruption as much as possible".

A diversion will be in place via Maritime Road, Allison Street and Prince Regent Street.

A pedestrian diversion is already in place via the Princess of Wales Bridge.

The multimillion-pound Stockton Waterfront urban park is expected to be completed in 2026.

Plans include a 180ft (55m) land bridge structure, an extension of the existing Millennium footbridge, and the construction of an amphitheatre that will link the High Street to the riverside.
