A town's fireworks display is set to return after a five-year absence.

The November show at Stockton Riverside attracted thousands of people each year but last took place in 2021.

Redevelopment work in the town centre led to the event being cancelled in 2022 and Stockton Council was unable to find an alternative plot able to hold the 30,000-strong crowd.

Councillor Nigel Cooke said the council was delighted to confirm the "hugely popular" display would return and coincide with the completion of the events space at the Stockton Waterfront development.

"We know that residents of all ages have enjoyed the fireworks displays over the years, so it will be a fantastic addition to our events calendar for 2026-27," he said.

"The safest way to enjoy fireworks is through attending an organised display and this will help ensure people are deterred from having unauthorised bonfires and setting off fireworks in public spaces across the borough."

The Stockton Waterfront urban park development is nearing completion and is set to open in the first half of this year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Work on the development began in 2024 on the site of a former shopping centre and will include play areas and performances spaces.
