Mole the dog is now safe and "back to normal"

A 13-year-old terrier called Mole stayed true to her name when she headed underground - but then got stuck.

Mole was missing for two days and her owners, who live near Bruton in Somerset, were so worried they contacted charity Search and Scan, which helps find lost pets.

The volunteers managed to track Mole down to the rabbit hole she had been exploring and rescue her safely.

Zara D'Abo, Mole's owner, said: "She'll often go down a burrow or two but she's never got stuck before and she normally always comes back home - but she's getting old. She's quite deaf and quite blind."

"Thankfully we got her home. It was nailbiting. It was a couple of days until we even found the right burrow to look in," D'Abo said.

"It was so tantalising. She's absolutely fine, she did 24 hours at the vets, got re-hydrated and she's gone back home. It's business as usual for her."

Jo Southway, at Search and Scan, said they figured out which burrow Mole was in when they heard her barking, on the second day of her being missing.

"We have traps and cameras and drones. Nick, who pulled Mole out of the hole, is usually our drone pilot, not our digger," Southway said.

"We get called out every day. We've had a few randoms - we've had a tortoise, we had an emu as well. Someone had to rugby tackle it and put a bag over its head."
