Jane Austen drama increasing hype around author
BBC/Bad WolfA new period drama based on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is increasing people's interest in the author, a tour guide has said.
The Other Bennet Sister, a BBC drama which was partly filmed in Bristol, is re-imagining Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice by focusing on Mary Bennet.
Theresa McDermott, founder of Strictly Jane Austen Tours in Bath, said shows like this one "add to the interest in Jane Austen and experiences in Bath".
She added: "I think it's great because it highlights and gives space to other characters from Jane Austen's books. Our customers really have great discussions around how would this character behave or respond if they had voice to do so?"
Theresa McDermottMcDermott said Jane Austen dramas are popular because they still resonate with audiences today.
"We can relate to the female experiences, there's a resonance for us today," she said.
Lauren Falconer, resident actor at The Jane Austen Centre in Bath where she plays Lizzie Bennet, said it is "exciting" to have a new Jane Austen drama.
"I've loved Jane Austen since I was a little girl, it's amazing I get to chat to people every day about how much they love her," she said.
"She was addressing really important issues, women's rights, many women in the Regency era had to marry to support themselves. She has very strong female characters."
Falconer said when she auditioned to work at the centre, they chose Lizzie Bennet's character for her.
"I'm a headstrong girl," she added.
The Other Bennet Sister is currently streaming on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
