Child rapist gets life term for 'horrendous' crimes

A man who subjected a boy and girl to multiple rapes over several years has been jailed for life.

Humberside Police described Robert McLurey's crimes, which were non-recent, as "horrendous and violent".

McLurey, 45, formerly of Scunthorpe, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of nine years and four months at Grimsby Crown Court on Monday.

He was found guilty of nine counts of rape and one count of attempted rape after a 10-day trial in December. In addition to his jail term, McLurey was handed a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will also be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Sgt Sarah Kelleher-Young, who led the investigation, said it had been "extremely complex and protracted" with detectives conducting "thousands of extensive enquiries" after a woman came forward in 2018 to report the offences she had suffered as a child.

During that investigation a second victim was identified.

Kelleher-Young said: "I would like to commend the bravery shown by both the man and woman for coming forward and reporting the horrendous and violent crimes they lived through as children at the hands of McLurey, and for the support from both of them whilst we were building a case against him.

"It is because they stood up to him and reclaimed control that we were able to get to this point where a man like McLurey is off our streets and behind bars for a long time."
