A man and woman have been arrested after a young child was taken to hospital with "unexplained" injuries, police have said.

Humberside Police received a call from hospital staff reporting concerns for the safety of a child in Grimsby on 8 February.

An 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and assaulting a young person. They have been released on conditional bail while inquiries continue.

Det Chief Insp Jayne Coutts said: "An investigation has been launched whilst we carry out lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances surrounding the child's injuries, which are currently being treated as unexplained."

She added: "As part of our response, the child has been safeguarded.

"A scene guard was put in place to allow officers to carry out their enquiries as the investigation continued, and has since been lifted."
