Bacon and sausages have been removed from the Grimsby Auditorium menu during performances of Peppa Pig's Big Family Show

A theatre has agreed to remove bacon and sausages from its café menu during a production featuring Peppa Pig.

Grimsby Auditorium said it made the decision "as a considerate gesture" following a request from an animal rights charity.

The theatre said it was committed to continually reviewing and enhancing its menu offerings, and would be removing all pork products during performances of Peppa Pig's Big Family Show on 3 and 4 March.

Jennifer White, from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), said she was "delighted" the theatre had instead agreed to sell vegan ham.

Peta's Jennifer White described it as a "compassionate decision"

The show is billed as being packed full of music, adventure and surprises for little ones, and the perfect introduction to theatre.

"I think we can all agree it's contradictory to cheer for a fictional pig family on stage while real pigs are enduring miserable lives and terrifying deaths for the bacon and sausages served up in the theatre's café," White said.

"This compassionate decision will help remind children that all pigs are individuals with personalities, and not body parts to be chopped up for a sandwich filler," she added.

It is not the first time Peta has campaigned in the region.

In 2023, a Peta billboard near a fish and chip shop in Cleethorpes suggested eating fish was the same as eating cats.

The charity has also called for Skegness' century-old mascot - the Jolly Fisherman - to be retired and replaced with a "Happy Plaice".
