"Unexpected issues" with underground utilities are causing delays on a major road infrastructure project, according to a local council.

Wiltshire Council said a "slight" delay to the Longfield Gyratory work in Trowbridge over the Christmas period was caused by the discovery of unrecorded infrastructure, such as water mains, gas lines or fibre-optic cables.

Work on the project, which includes upgrading outdated traffic signals, improving traffic flow and reducing congestion, began in July 2025 and is expected to be completed by April.

Councillor Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways, said such discoveries required attention to "prevent service disruptions and ensure safety".

"Before Christmas, our progress on the Longfield Gyratory in Trowbridge was slightly delayed due to unexpected issues with uncharted underground utilities," Smith added.

"Water mains, gas lines or fibre-optic cables are often discovered during projects."

Work is continuing along the northern side of Brown Street and from 22 January, County Way will be partially closed for vehicles heading towards Bradley Road.

That section will reopen as a new partial closure comes into effect for vehicles travelling from Bradley Road towards the gyratory between 5 February and 18 March.

The council is warning that the completion dates for later phases of the project may be further altered by the winter weather.
