A-road traffic lights set for months of works
Getty ImagesWork is set to start on refurbish two sets of traffic lights on an A-road which have "reached the end of their design life", a council has said.
Wiltshire Council wants to upgrade the signalised pedestrian crossing on the A4 near Market Hill, in Calne, and at the traffic light-controlled junction on the A4 Curzon Street next to Calne Town Hall.
The project will start on 30 March and will take approximately 12 weeks to finish.
Wiltshire councillor Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways, said: "Once finished, the improvements will mean safer crossings, smoother traffic flow and better access for all road users."
The pedestrian crossing areas will on the sites will also be upgraded to meet current safety standards, the council added.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the work, and the layby outside the Town Hall will then be changed to a short‑stay loading bay to support deliveries to nearby businesses.
During the works, the taxi rank and the disabled parking bays outside Calne Library will be suspended.
The bus stops in the will also be closed while the works are being carried out, and temporary bus stops will be provided nearby.
Smith said: "The traffic signals in these areas have reached the end of their design life, so they've become a priority for refurbishment.
"As part of our wider programme to upgrade older equipment across the county, we're replacing them with modern, energy‑efficient technology that will make a real difference for everyone using these busy parts of town."
