Man accused of killing his mother appears in court

A man has appeared in court after his mother was found dead at a property in West Sussex.

Alexandru Nechifor, 37, was at Worthing Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with murdering Antoneta Mirt, 65.

Sussex Police said it was called to an address in Durrington Lane, Durrington, at 19:50 BST on Thursday following concerns for a woman's welfare.

The court heard she had been suffocated and her body was found wrapped in blankets tied at both ends on the bedroom floor.

Nechifor, who is also accused of assaulting two police officers, has been remanded in custody.

He is due to appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing at Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday.
