A 68-year-old man has been charged with raping a woman in her 30s in West Sussex, police have said.

Stephen Robinson is accused of committing the offence in Salvington Road, Durrington, near Worthing, at about 18:00 BST on Thursday.

The victim, a 37-year-old woman, has received specialist safeguarding support as detectives continue to investigate, police said.

Robinson, of Worthing, was remanded in custody and appeared before Brighton Magistrates' Court for an initial hearing on Saturday, according to police.

He has since been further remanded to appear before Lewes Crown Court on 8 June.

"We would urge the public to refrain from posting any comments on social media which could prejudice the right to a fair trial," a police spokesperson said.
