On-call firefighters were needed to rescue a horse after it became stuck in a ditch.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to West Lane on Hayling Island at 09:00 GMT on Friday.

The team found the animal stuck in water up to the middle of its legs and needed to cut away at thick gorse and trees in order to access it.

Specialist animal crews from Lyndhurst and Winchester arrived at the scene and a local vet sedated the horse before firefighters lifted the animal to safety and returned it to its owner.
