A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after his car was recorded doing 110mph on the motorway.

A car was first spotted travelling at high speed on the M5 between junction two, for Oldbury, and one at about 18:40 GMT on Tuesday, West Midlands Police said.

Officers stopped the car at junction nine of the M6, near Walsall, where the 39-year-old man was arrested. He remains in custody for questioning.

Supt Jack Hadley, Head of Roads Policing Unit, said there was never an excuse to ever get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"The devastating impact on other drivers, pedestrians and the life-changing consequences should be a strong enough reason to not drive under the influence," he said.

"I really don't see why some people think this is acceptable behaviour.

"If you suspect someone of driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Report them. You can do this anonymously and it could end up saving lives."
