A speeding driver who hit and killed a pedestrian as she was crossing the road has been jailed.

Muazzam Luqman was driving a Vauxhall Astra at more than 70mph in a 40mph limit when he struck the 54-year-old on Birmingham Road, Oldbury on 6 August.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Luqman fled the crash before returning, where he was arrested, said West Midlands Police.

The 22-year-old of Blakeley Hall Road, Oldbury admitted causing death by dangerous driving, and was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court to six years in prison, banned from driving for eight years and will have to take an extended retest.

Luqman also pleaded guilty to failing to stop and using a vehicle on the road without insurance.

DS Julie Lyman from the force's serious collision investigation unit said: "Luqman disregarded the speed limit, which cost an innocent woman her life.

"He will now spend years behind bars and is disqualified from driving for eight years.

"Our thoughts remain with the victim's loved ones."
