Christmas promenade parking has been suspended amid a warning of crashing waves bringing debris onto coastal roads as gale force winds hit the Isle of Man.

Ronaldsway Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for coastal overtopping around the time of high tide at 23:35 GMT - following on from a yellow warning in place in the morning.

Forecasters said areas most likely to see issues were Shore Road in Rushen, promenades in Castletown, Laxey and Ramsey, as well as the central and northern parts of Douglas Promenade.

As a result, the Department of Infrastructure has suspended parking on the Douglas Promenade Walkway until 10:00 on Saturday due to the risk posed to cars from waves overnight.

A yellow warning was in place on Friday morning with a further amber for the evening's high tide

Gusts were expected to reach 60mph (97km/h), with the winds strengthening throughout the day, forecasts said.

The amber warning, which is in place from 21:30 until 01:30 on Saturday, would see "moderate overtopping" and a "risk of significant debris in exposed areas", they added.

The incoming adverse weather also led to disruption to Friday's ferry sailing between the island and Lancashire.

Isle of Man Steam Packet cancelled Friday afternoon's 14:30 Manxman crossing from Heysham to Douglas as well as its 20:30 return to the Lancashire port.
