Police are investigating a hate crime after bacon was put on a glass door of a mosque during prayer.

Avon and Somerset Police said the incident happened at a mosque in Cheltenham Road, Bristol, in the first week of Ramadan and was reported to officers on 20 February.

Police have confirmed officers are treating the incident as a hate crime, and released CCTV of a man officers want to speak to who may have information.

Ch Insp Serena Serjeant said: "This was a deliberate act which has caused significant concern to the community during a period of heightened religious observance, and we will not tolerate hate in our communities."

Police described the man they are appealing for as bald and wearing a high-visibility trousers and a dark jacket.

The force added they have increased patrols and are in contact with the victims, and other mosques in the city, while enquiries continue.

Serjeant said: "We promptly attended the scene upon receiving the report and we are continuing to engage with mosque leaders throughout Ramadan following this appalling incident, and we will continue to offer our support and assurance.

"We are treating this as a religiously aggravated public order offence, and we would urge anybody with information on the incident or the identity of the individual concerned to contact us."
