Mounted unit ceremonial kit returned
West Midlands PoliceCeremonial equipment used by West Midlands Police's mounted unit before it disbanded in 1999 has been returned to the force.
Silver-coloured metal breastplates, which keep saddles in place, were distributed among other forces when the unit ceased to operate.
Last month, the mounted unit became operational again and Thames Valley Police has since returned the last known original breastplate that belonged to West Midlands Police.
"The kit is in remarkable condition. That's a combination of the quality local craftmanship and the item being so well cared for over the years," Ch Supt Sarah Burton, with the West Midlands force, said.
The plates are embossed with the royal cypher of Queen Elizabeth II and are fixed on leather straps and worn across the chest of each horse.
PC Chris Harriett from Thames Valley Police mounted unit said the plate was discovered during a move to the force's new base in Buckinghamshire.
"A colleague carefully restored it back to its former glory and it felt right that we handed it back it to mark the return of police horses to the West Midlands," he said.
"After five years on the unit and offering mutual aid to WMP on many occasions, it is an honour to return the breastplate."
The force received two horses from West Midlands colleagues who were were used for policing state visits at Windsor Castle, and escorting the royal family and their guests at Royal Ascot, he added.
Ch Supt Burton said it was a pleasure to have the kit returned.
"Our WMP museum already has a breastplate on display, so I look forward to placing this one in our new Edgbaston stables as a reminder of our history."
The new mounted unit carried out stop and searches as part of their first duties last month and will also be used to control crowds at football matches.
The force currently has five horses, Belgravia, Bruce, Yonkers, Yve, and Yvonne. It also has six riders with more officers in training to ride a total of 12 horses.
