Tribute to admired dad and professor who died

The family of a former university professor who died after being hit by a car in Coventry have paid tribute to him, describing him as "greatly loved" and "admired".

Harry Matlay, 73, was seriously injured while he was walking near the junction of Walsgrave Road and Grantham Street shortly before 14:00 GMT on 2 January.

He died in hospital in the early hours on Wednesday, said police.

A statement from the family, released by West Midlands Police, said he would be deeply missed they were "deeply saddened" by the loss.

Prof Matlay had worked at Birmingham City Business School, Warwick University Business School and the University of the West of Scotland Business School.

"He was greatly loved and admired by many, and his passing is a profound loss," his family said.

"He will be deeply missed by his children, family, friends, ex-colleagues and ex-students, around the world. We respectfully request privacy at this time."

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene and is assisting officers with inquiries, said the force.

Det Sgt Richard Evans, said: "We are offering support to Prof Matlay's family at this devastating time as we continue working to establish the exact circumstances of the collision."
