Two teenagers have been seriously injured in a crash on a motorway in north Lancashire.

It happened on the M6 northbound between Junctions 32 and 33, south of Lancaster, after a crash between two cars and a lorry at about 23:15 GMT on Sunday.

A green Nissan Micra hit the crash barrier in the central reservation, before coming to a stop in the third lane where it was struck by a silver Toyota Celica VVTI, which was in turn hit by an HGV that failed to stop, police said.

The Micra driver, a 17-year-old boy, and his 16-year-old passenger were both taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Footage appeal

Nobody else was seriously injured, police said.

Officers are looking to trace the lorry and its driver.

Both sides of the carriageway were closed while emergency service attended the scene.

Sgt Bex Price said: "I know the motorway was closed for a significant amount of time, and I want to take the time to thank anyone who had their journey disrupted or delayed.

"We believe the collision also involved a HGV, and whilst offline enquiries are ongoing to trace it, we are appealing to anyone who has information or footage that could help us locate it.

"If you have dashcam footage of the collision itself, or of any of the vehicles in the lead up to the collision, between J32-J33 Northbound, between 23:10 and 23:20, please get in touch with us, and let us know."
