The family of "deeply devoted" grandparents who died in a crash on the A1 last week alongside their dog have paid tribute to them.

Christine and Stephen Routledge, from Berwick, in Northumberland, died when a heavy goods vehicle collided with their Skoda as they were travelling on the A1, near Buckton, at 07:40 GMT on 14 January, Northumbria Police said.

The HGV had been travelling northbound when it collided with the Skoda and another car on the southbound carriageway.

Mr Routledge, who was 64, died at the scene while 66-year-old Mrs Routledge was taken to hospital where she later passed away. Their dog Bear also died from injuries sustained in the crash.

'They are all together'

In a tribute to the couple, who were grandparents to 10 children, their family said: "Our parents were loving, generous and deeply devoted to our family.

"They were the foundation of our lives - always offering support, guidance and unconditional love."

The statement added that the family was "comforted by the fact they are all together".

The driver of the HGV and the driver of the other vehicle involved - an Audi - were both taken to hospital for treatment after the crash and they have since been discharged.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he has been released under investigation, police said.

Northumbria Police urged anyone with information or footage of the lead-up to the crash to get in touch.
