Two people have died in a crash involving three vehicles on the A1.

A lorry travelling northbound on the A1 near Buckton Moor in Northumberland collided with a Skoda and an Audi car travelling southbound at about 07:40 GMT, Northumbria Police said.

The driver of the Skoda, a man in his 60s, died at the scene, while a woman passenger died later in hospital, the force said.

It led to the road being closed for most of Wednesday between Alnwick and Lowick. Appealing for witnesses, police said a man in his 30s had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remained in police custody.

The driver of the HGV is being treated in hospital for his injuries, which officers believe are not life-threatening.

The Audi driver was also in hospital, police said, with injuries not believed to be serious.

'A tragic incident'

National Highways said the A1 reopened in both directions at about 22:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Sgt Dave Roberts said: "Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the man and woman who have sadly died in this tragic incident."

He urged anyone with dashcam footage, witnesses, or anyone who was travelling on the A1 around the time of the crash to get in touch.

"Any information you are able to provide could prove crucial to our inquiries," he added.
