Hugo Wils launched his campaign with striking binmen in Birmingham

A trade unionist has been announced as the Communist League's candidate for the forthcoming Gorton and Denton by-election in Greater Manchester.

Hugo Wils, a 38-year-old aerospace factory worker and member of the Unite trade union, was revealed on the day nominations closed for the 26 February by-election.

Wils said: "The march to another world war is a giant attack on the desire of working people to live in peace – and on our living standards, jobs and working conditions."

The by-election was triggered by the resignation on health grounds of former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne.

Wils, who opened his campaign by joining a solidarity picket line with striking refuse workers in Birmingham, also said: "Only the working class can prevent another global slaughter by taking political power into our own hands."

He added: "These are the central issues, not media hype on the turmoil within and between Labour, Conservative, Reform, Greens and other capitalist parties."
