Water main being replaced after 80 years
BBCA water main installed just after World War Two is set to be replaced next year.
Guernsey Water said the main in Mill Street and Mansell Street in St Peter Port had burst twice in 2025, including an incident which flooded a business.
It said work on the main, installed in 1946, would start on 2 January as part of a two-month project to replace it with a larger and more durable pipe.
The company said people would be able to access businesses on the street while the work took place and temporary overland pipes would keep water supplies running.
The firm added it would clean each cobble it needed to remove from the area before putting them back.
Carl Falla, Guernsey Water's capital delivery manager, said: "Work will take place in phases, with overland temporary pipes installed to ensure all homes and businesses remain connected to the water supply during the project.
"It's going to be a meticulous job, with each of the thousands of cobbles removed, cleaned and returned as they were."
