Merseyside Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct

A man has died after coming off his electric bike when police officers attempted to stop him in Liverpool.

The 23-year-old hit a stationary police van in Back Falkner Street South at 15:15 GMT on Friday.

Merseyside Police said it followed officers' attempt "to stop him and carry out inquiries".

The force said it was cooperating "fully with an independent investigation" by the Independent Office for Police Conduct watchdog (IOPC), and urged people not to speculate and avoid sharing rumours or misinformation on social media.

Officers administered first aid and CPR at the scene, and an ambulance was called taking the man to hospital where he died shortly afterwards, the force added.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to confirm the cause of death.
