Two people have died after the car they were travelling in left a motorway and hit a tree in South Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called to the southbound M1 at about 23:35 GMT on Wednesday to reports of a collision involving a grey BMW car near Barnsley.

The male driver and his female passenger, both in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene, South Yorkshire Police said. Their families are being supported by specialist officers.

The motorway was closed in both directions for nearly 12 hours to allow for forensic investigation work to take place between junctions 36 and 37.

South Yorkshire Police appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage of the car prior to the collision to get in touch.
