Hundreds arrested in drink and drug drive crackdown
Surrey PoliceA month-long campaign to cut the number of people killed or seriously injured by drink and drug drivers over the festive period has resulted in 369 arrests.
In December, Surrey Police made 167 arrests for drug driving, 81 for drink driving, 39 for driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and 82 for other offences.
The number of arrests was up significantly on the 196 made during last year's Operation Limit, the national winter campaign targeting drink and drug driving.
Ch Insp Karen Coyne, Surrey Police roads policing operational command lead, said the operation "removed a significant number of impaired drivers from our roads".
She said: "These results demonstrate the impact of focused, intelligence-led enforcement reinforced by visible presence on our roads...every arrest represents a potential tragedy prevented."
Year-on-year trends indicate that drug driving continues to be more prevalent than drink driving in Surrey.
In 2025, there was more than double the number of arrests for drug driving compared with drink driving, and in December 2024, officers made 140 arrests for drug driving and 84 for drink driving.
