A road closure and traffic measures are in place in Shrewsbury near a 16th Century building where fire broke out.

Emergency services were called at 03:30 GMT on Tuesday to Perches House on Windsor Place, near Castle Street.

Shropshire Council said Windsor Place had since been closed to through traffic from the junction with St Mary's Place, and a walkway had been set up to allow pedestrian access along the frontage of the building.

The authority has also arranged for scaffolding to be put up to secure the facade.

In addition, a visibility mirror has been erected opposite St Mary's Water Lane to help motorists navigate the bend at the top of the embankment.

The council added that the current one-way traffic order between Castle Street and St Mary's Water Lane had been suspended to allow two-way traffic flows.

The fire saw dozens of people evacuated from nearby buildings and a woman named locally as Rose Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Wednesday, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said its investigation into what caused the fire could begin, as the building had been deemed safe enough to enter.

It said the blaze was not being treated as suspicious.
