Dozens of firefighters tackle large house fire

Dozens of firefighters have been tackling a large house fire where people were reported to be in the building.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution when crews were called to the fire on Castle Street in Shrewsbury at 03:22 GMT. West Mercia Police spokesperson said they have closed surrounding roads.

Chief Constable Richard Cooper said it had been a "significant fire" and he expected the emergency services to remain at the scene "for some time".

People have been urged to avoid the area. Seven fire engines were sent, a Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said .

Surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution and people have been taken to a reception centre at Shrewsbury's Guildhall, he added.

"Unless you have an absolute need to go to that location, don't go," Cooper said.
