Former riverside pub to become five-bed home

The owner of a former riverside pub has been given the go-ahead to turn it into a family home.

The Dog in a Doublet, on the North Bank of the River Nene in Thorney, was run by former MasterChef contestant John McGinn before it closed in January 2023.

Peterborough City Council has now granted owner Quaffans Ltd permission to transform the building into a five-bedroom home.

The proposal was approved subject to a number of conditions, including the submission of a construction traffic management plan.

The pub featured on Channel 4's Four in a Bed in 2017.

The plans included the demolition of a rear extension installed during the late 1970s, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported.

According to the planning statement, Quaffans Ltd was unable to let out the once-popular pub to a new landlord.

"Also, the manner in which the building was vacated has meant that the building is no longer fit for purpose without significant work," the statement added.

Four bedrooms will be built on the first floor, with a fifth bedroom built on the ground floor, along with a kitchen, utility, study, living/dining area and snug.

The plans also included three parking spaces.
