The lorry overturned on Monday afternoon, police said

A road will be closed until at least lunchtime after a lorry overturned near Peterborough, ending up in a ditch, police have said.

It happened on the B1040 between Thorney and Whittlesey on Monday afternoon, Cambridgeshire Police said.

Officers said the vehicle left the road, which was subsequently closed between Toneham Lane and North Side.

The HGV has since been removed, but police said "due to the condition of the road surface", that stretch of the B1040 would be closed overnight and "will not likely reopen until lunch time tomorrow [Tuesday]".

The road will have to be cleared and assessed before it can be used safely, police said

Cambridgeshire Police wrote on Facebook that "due to wet mud the road surface is very slippy and for the safety of road users the decision has been made to keep the road closed until the road can be cleaned properly".
