Weekly brown bin collections to start in March
Hull City CouncilBrown bins and food caddies in Hull will be collected weekly from the end of March, the council has confirmed.
Hull City Council (HCC) said the current fortnightly service will be replaced from 31 March for the majority of households in the city.
Officials said further information would be sent out in the coming weeks to outline how the collections would work.
Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment at HCC said: "Introducing weekly food and garden waste collections will help us recycle even more and make a real, lasting difference to our environment."
As part of the government's Simpler Recycling initiative, all local authorities must collect food waste from households on a weekly basis.
Brown bins, which are used for food and garden waste, are currently collected on a fortnightly basis.
Hull City CouncilThe council said it had hired 70 new workers to help with the new rounds.
A web app will also be launched to give people reminders and updates on the collections.
The recycling plan will be introduced at flats and communal properties on a phased basis over the next year, the council added.
Small food caddies will be made available for those who need one and the council will also increase the number of places where people can collect free replacement liners.
Quinn said: "By placing food waste in the brown bin, it can be recycled into environmentally friendly local compost.
"This approach is not only better for the planet, but it also saves council tax payers money, so we're fully embracing the opportunity to expand food waste collections for our residents."
Waste from the blue recycling and black general bins will continue to be collected every two weeks.
