A mental health hospital in Bradford will be redeveloped after the government approved the business case for funding.

The £65m project at Lynfield Mount Hospital will see the current central building refurbished, two wards upgraded to ensure all rooms have en-suite facilities and a new two-storey ward built on the existing site.

Outdoor garden spaces and recreational areas are also planned as part of the redevelopment, which is expected to be completed by 2028.

Therese Patten, chief executive of Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, said the work would bring "significant improvements" for patients and create a "better working environment for staff".

"We have worked closely with staff, patients, families, carers and partners to develop our plans and ensure that the redeveloped site can support the needs of our local communities for years to come," she said.

Minister of State for Health Karin Smyth said: "This improved Lynfield Mount Hospital will offer a safe, welcoming environment, helping patients' recovery and boosting wellbeing."

The government has pledged £50m towards the project, with a further £15m allocated from the West Yorkshire Integrated Care System.

As part of the development, the hospital will have a newly designed entrance to create a "bright, warm and welcoming space", a spokesperson said.

Communal areas and infrastructure will also be upgraded, they added.

A hospital spokesperson said all of their services would continue throughout the work, with enabling works to prepare the site already under way.
