Improved lighting for 'dark and dangerous' tunnel
GoogleA tunnel is set to have improved safety lighting after a campaign.
Mill Road tunnel, just outside Rugby railway station in Warwickshire, is used by hundreds of drivers, pedestrians and parents with pushchairs.
Described as "hazardous", the tunnel is said to have created dangerous conditions and near-miss accidents.
John Slinger, MP for Rugby, said he raised the issued to the council, Network Rail and on social media repeatedly over several months. He said it knew it was dangerous due to both his constituents telling him and personal experience.
"The lighting was genuinely hazardous, especially on bright days when you go from sunshine to near-darkness in seconds," he said.
The MP worked alongside Rugby Borough councillor Sarah Feeney who welcomed the news the tunnel will be improved.
"Having nearly witnessed an accident in the narrow part of the tunnel, I believe that this will help to make everyone safer," she said.
The upgrade will be funded through the government's £104 million local transportation programme, subject to approval, with installation expected by summer 2026.
