A man has died in hospital two weeks after suffering "critical" head injuries during a fight in Scarborough.

North Yorkshire Police said 40-year-old Damon Nicky John O'Nions-Cairns died on Tuesday as a result of his injuries sustained at about 23:15 GMT on 30 December.

The force said he had involved in an altercation with a group of men at the crossroads of Longwestgate, Auborough Street, Cross Street and Friars Way. He was found injured at his home on New Year's Day and taken to hospital.

His family released a statement describing him as a "much-loved son, brother, uncle, grandson, husband and father" and said the "tragedy has broken the family's hearts".

The relatives of Mr O'Nions-Cairns, originally from Bridlington, said: "He enjoyed going fishing with his father.

"He was a little tearaway at school. He had a heart of gold but struggled with mental illness.

"He would help anybody, especially elderly folk who he treated with respect."

Leon Upson, 19, of no fixed address, appeared at York Crown Court on 6 January charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident. He also faces charges of possession of Class A and Class B drugs.

He is due to appear at the same court on 9 February.
