An investigation has been launched after the deaths of a man and a woman in two different areas of the country.

Devon & Cornwall Police said officers were called to an address in Shirburn Road in Torquay, Devon, just before 16:00 GMT on Saturday where a woman in her 70s was found dead and her death is being treated as unexplained.

Hampshire Police attended a property in Hythe, Hampshire, and found a man in his 40s dead. The force said his death was not believed to be suspicious.

The man and the woman are believed to have known each other and next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police said an investigation was ongoing to establish the full circumstances of both deaths.

Officers said scene guards were in place at the addresses while inquiries were conducted.

Det Ch Insp Dave Pebworth, from Devon & Cornwall Police, said: "This is a very sad incident and we are supporting the next-of-kin of those who have died.

"We continue to work with our colleagues from Hampshire Police as we investigate this matter."

He said there would be an increased police presence in the two areas and anyone with information should contact the force.
