Safety recommendations after deckhand's death
RNLISafety recommendations have been made after a deckhand died after being struck by fishing gear.
The Peterhead-registered Honeybourne III was south of Newhaven, East Sussex, when the incident happened on 6 October 2023.
Denver Teleron, 35, from the Philippines, died when a section of chain failed and he was struck by gear that had been suspended.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has recommended owners and operators of beam and scallop trawlers review vessel equipment and on-board operations to ensure the safety of crews working on deck.
MAIBThe MAIB report said an investigation established that the "complex" bending applied to chain links reduced the ability to withstand the load applied.
The MAIB said Honeybourne III's owner, Macduff Shellfish (Scotland) Ltd, had reviewed and amended its procedure for the management of lifting equipment inspections on board.
It has recommended that the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) conducts a "focused inspection campaign" on board relevant UK scallop dredgers and beam trawlers.
The MAIB wants to raise awareness among skippers and crews of the "significant hazards" they could face.
