Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident in Westcliff-on-Sea

A man suffered multiple stab wounds during a "violent" attack near a seafront, police have said.

It happened at the junction of Station Road and Palmerston Road, in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, at about 20:30 GMT on Saturday.

The victim remained seriously injured in hospital on Monday and detectives have appealed for help to trace those responsible.

Det Supt Shaun Kane said: "Key to our work is speaking with people who witnessed any concerning or violent behaviour in the area on Saturday evening."

Staff at Southend Hospital alerted the police after the man attended the emergency department at 21:00.

Officers said the culprit may have been in the area from 20:00 that night, and that the stabbing happened by a wall.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information on what happened to please come forward," Det Supt Kane added.
