Are "net zero" pledges useful – or just hot water?
"Net zero" and "carbon neutral" climate pledges have become all the rage in recent years. 133 countries now have some kind of net zero commitment, which covers 78% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Many companies are also setting targets to reach net zero emissions.
These targets can often sound good on paper. But in practice, countries or companies with net zero goals are not always taking the action they need to today.
