Inside the search for South America's most cryptic bird

Uruguay may be small, but it is rich in birdlife, with more than 500 species across an accessible landscape. Among the most elusive is the urutaú, or common potoo - perfectly camouflaged by day and the source of haunting legend by night.

We follow lifelong birder Mauricio Silveira as rare reports of a nesting urutaú draw him across the country, leading to an almost never‑seen sight: a baby urutaú.
