Watch: Kīlauea volcano sends lava fountains 1,400ft into the air
Fountains of glowing lava began erupting from Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano on Tuesday, 23 December. The fiery red plumes from the south vent shot 1,400ft (420m) into the sky with fountains out of the north vent reaching 1,000ft (280m), according to the United States Geological Survey.
The USGS described the event as Episode 39, which ended abruptly on 24 December after nearly six hours of continuous eruption, ejecting an estimated 10 million cubic meters of lava.
Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The current eruptive period has lasted about a year, with episodes separated by several days.
